Aug. 30, 2017 – In the spirit of “fun for a cause” and to kickoff September’s Hunger Action Month, Food Bank for Westchester has partnered with Pace University for it’s first-ever Miles for Meals 5K Fun Run, which will take place at Pace’s Pleasantville Campus, located at 861 Bedford Road in Pleasantville, on Saturday, Sept. 9.
County Executive Robert P. Astorino joins the Food Bank for Westchester in inviting everyone – of all skill levels – to “pace” themselves as they run, jog, walk or sprint the five-kilometer course during Hunger Action Month. Food Bank for Westchester joins other hunger-relief organizations across the country that are asking community members to take action to fight hunger throughout the month of September.
“We are encouraging everyone to join our movement and contribute to the real and lasting impact we continue to make in our county every day,” said Leslie Gordon, President and CEO of Food Bank for Westchester. “By joining us for our Miles for Meals 5K, you can help us move one step closer to create a hunger-free Westchester.”
Hunger Action Month was established by Feeding America in 2008 when it decided it was time for a nationwide push to get involved with the hunger crisis across the country. During September people throughout the nation help to feed those in need in their neighborhood, working to ensure that people who live with hunger every day can get some relief. Food Bank for Westchester has led this campaign in Westchester County for several years.
"As we kick off Hunger Action Month, the key word of course is action," Astorino said. "Every action we take against hunger - big or small - makes a difference."
Individuals interested in participating in Food Bank for Westchester’s Miles for Meals 5K Fun Run pay $35 each that will go towards their efforts to feed individuals in Westchester County who are hungry or food insecure. Participants who can raise $100 or more will receive a Fun Run T-Shirt and participants who raise $250 or more will receive the T-Shirt as well as a swag bag full of goodies. Children under 12 years old run for free with no fundraising requirement, and Pace students can participate for $20 each.
This event is sponsored by Pace University, Stop & Shop, Robison Oil, All Star Products Group and Judicial Title Insurance Agency. In addition, the event will be emceed by WPAW, the Pace University student radio station. Kacey from 100.7 WHUD will also be on site participating in the event.
