Funding will Allow for 62 Units of Housing, Sidewalk & Drainage Improvements
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins is announcing $1 million in funding for the Mayfair Apartments in Greenburgh, provided through New York State’s County Infrastructure Grant Program. The funding will support the creation of 62 affordable senior rental units through new construction, transform a former community center, and build over a mile of new sidewalks with improved drainage.
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “Creating fair and affordable housing opportunities for all of our residents in Westchester is a keystone of this administration. The Mayfair Apartments in Greenburgh is a great example of the County seeing the potential in an underdeveloped property, and transforming it into a complex that will pay dividends to our residents for years to come. We want to thank Governor Kathy Hochul for her efforts in securing $1 million in funding for this second phase of construction, which will allow us to add an additional 62 units of housing for our seniors with low and moderate incomes.”
Commissioner of the Westchester County Planning Department Blanca Lopez said: “On behalf of the Planning Department, we are thrilled that Westchester County has been awarded $1 million through New York State’s County Infrastructure Program. Director of Community Development Leonard Gruenfeld dedicated significant effort to preparing a strong application that identified key infrastructure projects aligned with our long-term planning goals. These funds will not only support the development of new affordable housing as part of Phase II of the Mayfair Apartments located in the Town of Greenburgh and adjacent to Westchester Community College—but will also enhance neighborhood connectivity through the installation of new sidewalks and critical drainage improvements around the Mayfair area.”
Key details of Mayfair Apartments Phase II include an adaptive reuse of the former community center to construct 62 rental units specifically designed for seniors. More than one mile of new sidewalks will be added along the access road linking SUNY Westchester Community College to Knollwood Road, and the new sidewalks will continue on Knollwood Road to connect to existing sidewalks near I-287. These improvements will also include upgraded drainage, ensuring safer, storm-resistant pedestrian pathways.
The property, formerly known as the WestHELP Greenburgh Homeless Shelter on the Westchester Community College Campus, was first repurposed into 74 units of affordable rental housing for seniors in September 2021, which represented Phase 1 of the development.
