Hispanic mom and daughterSept. 16, 2015 -- County Executive Robert P. Astorino announced today a variety of business, civic and social activities taking place throughout Westchester between Sept. 18 and Oct. 15, 2015 in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

"Hispanic Heritage Month is a great time to learn about the eclectic mix of Hispanic customs and cultures represented in Westchester,” said Astorino. “From bilingual programs and services to fantastic Latin cuisine and music, there is so much going on that people can benefit from and enjoy.”

Latin Business Today Hispanic Business Summit
The county, in partnership with Latin Business Today, will host its 2nd Annual Hispanic Business Summit, “Crossroads to Customers, Capital and Contracts” on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m. at Westchester Community College’s Gateway Center located at 75 Grasslands Road in Valhalla. Hispanic Heritage events scheduled include:

History of Hispanic Heritage Month:

  • Hispanic Heritage begins on Sept. 15 because it marks the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries including: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
  • The tradition of celebrating Hispanic heritage began in 1968 but Hispanic Heritage Month was legally enacted into law on Aug. 17, 1988 by President Reagan.
  • During Hispanic Heritage month, contributions made by the Hispanic-American community are acknowledged and celebrated. It is also a time to celebrate the unique customs, cultures and histories of the Hispanic-American community.
  • Hispanic-Americans are the largest ethnic minority in the United States.
