Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 21Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" And just as the great orator used his words to stir people to action, people throughout Westchester will come together to serve their communities and recognize those who follow in Dr. King’s spirit.

On Saturday, Jan. 19, volunteers from throughout Westchester, Rockland and Putnam will participate in dozens of projects organized by The Volunteer Center of United Way.

“Martin Luther King Day is a time to reflect on his legacy and think about what actions we can take as citizens to make our communities and our nation better places today and for future generations,” said County Executive Robert P. Astorino. “I thank The Volunteer Center for coordinating a day of service here in Westchester."

Barbara L. Edwards, chair of the Westchester County African American Advisory Board, said Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a man of service, once stating that "all labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence."

"What better way to honor such a champion of peace and service than to volunteer our time and talent on this great day of service," Edwards said. "The King Day of service is the perfect opportunity to make an annual commitment toward making our communities better. It is especially important for us to commemorate Dr. King's uncompromising legacy of service and to acknowledge how his powerful influence shed light on our hopes, prompted our aspirations and gave relevance to our dreams for equality and justice."
