Pfc. Fahey has died in AfghanistanMarch 2, 2011 -- County Executive Robert P. Astorino today directed that flags at county buildings be flown at half-mast in memory of Pfc. David R. Fahey Jr., 23, a former resident of Yorktown who died Feb. 28 supporting Operating Enduring Freedom in Kandahar province, Afghanistan.

Pfc. Fahey attended Mildred E. Strang Middle School in Yorktown Heights before moving to Norwalk, CT, where he resided at the time of his enlistment.

According to information provided by the U.S. Department of Defense, Pfc. Fahey died of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 504th Military Police Battalion, 42nd Military Police Brigade, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Pfc. Fahey," said Astorino. "He gave his life for his country, and for that we will always be grateful."
