County Executive Robert P. Astorino joined other officials at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 27 to to celebrate the opening of the Village of Sleepy Hollow Senior Center, 55 Elm St.
The newly completed and expanded 6,500-square-foot building includes an activities room, an office, a kitchen and a meeting room that can seat 125 people.
It was named in honor of the late James Galgano, who was mayor of the village from 1973-1977 and an active member of the Sleepy Hollow Senior Organization.
For Sleepy Hollow seniors, the center will be open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. The two-phases of the building's construction cost about $1 million each, of which $350,000 came from county-administered Community Development Block Grants (CDBG).
"It is a good day when we can take a few moments to gather and celebrate a building that makes a difference in the quality of the lives of the seniors of the Village of Sleepy Hollow," Astorino said.
"This is a place where seniors can go to meet friends and make new ones, to participate in activities, and attend classes to learn new things. It is a home-away-from home, a safe place in which to have fun and engage in conversations."
A former sales office, the 1,400-square foot building shell was donated by Ginsburg Development, which also paid to relocate the building to the current site next to Barnhart Park. The village has operated a senior program since 1975.
