therisingWestchester County held its annual memorial to those who died on Sept. 11, 2001, at a short ceremony Saturday, Sept. 11. It was attended by several hundred people. 

The ceremony took place by The Rising, Westchester County’s September 11 Memorial at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla.   

County Executive Robert P. Astorino's remarks focused on the importance of publicly remembering the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The county executive was joined by  family members of some of the 111 Westchester residents who died in the terrorist attacks. Others who participated included Rep. Nita Lowey and members of the Board of Legislators, including Chairman Ken Jenkins.

The program included a laying of the wreath and reading of the names of Westchester’s 9-11 victims.  The memorial lists the names of the Westchester residents who died and a quote about them from their loved ones. Viewing of the memorial followed the short ceremony.

"The Rising" is the work of Frederic Schwartz, an internationally renowned Manhattan architect.
