Nov. 7, 2011 -- On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, Westchester veterans have two special benefits to show the county's appreciation, County Executive Robert P. Astorino announced last week.

There are also other Veterans Day events going on throughout the county. And the county's  Veterans Service Agency has a month-long "virtual jobs fair" aimed at matching veterans with employees who would like to hire them.

"Our Veterans Service Agency is there year-round to help our veterans and their families," said Astorino. "But it is always good when the county government can come up with some extra ways to show our appreciation for their service and sacrifice."

Two new FAVOR card benefits
The two benefits – both of which require presentation of the county-issued FAVOR card – are the following:

  • Veterans may park for free at the county-operated parking lot at the North White Plains Train Station, located off the Bronx River Parkway. This saves them money if they are taking the train to the city to attend a Veterans Day event. (Veterans are advised to show the attendant their FAVOR card.)
  • Green fees at five county's golf courses (Saxon Woods, Maple Moore, Dunwoodie, Sprain Lake and Mohansic) will be waived for veterans teeing off after 11 a.m. The regular fee for golf carts and or pull carts will apply.

The FAVOR card may be obtained at various parks offices, including at the golf courses, as well as the Westchester County Center. Call the county's Veterans Service Agency at 995-2146 for further information.

Virtual Job Fair
The ongoing Virtual Job Fair coincides with the month of Veterans Day and addresses the high rate of unemployment for veterans and returning veterans who need assistance in finding work. It is a coordinated effort of the County Executive's Office, the Westchester-Putnam One-Stop Employment Office, the Westchester County Veterans Service Agency, New York State Department of Labor and local businesses and municipalities.

The Virtual Job Fair will identify businesses willing to hire veterans and get jobs posted on the One-Stop Web site. Veterans will register and be matched and referred. Those without computers may report to the One-Stop offices for assistance.
