Looking for help figuring out how to buy a home? Come to the 12th Affordable Homeownership Expo on Saturday, March 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Westchester County Center, 198 Central Ave., White Plains.

Sponsored by the Westchester Interfaith Housing Corp. with the help of Westchester County, the expo is free and will include workshops on the following topics:

  • Steps to buying a home
  • The role of realtors, attorneys and inspectors
  • How to improve credit
  • Mortgages
  • Grants and loans for down payment and closing costs.

Representatives from non-profit counseling organizations, banks, realtors and other professionals will be available to discuss individual needs.

At noon, there will be information about the county government's ongoing Fair and Affordable Housing program, which calls for the development of 750 units of housing over the next seven years in 31 designated communities. Expo attendees will be able to register in a county-sponsored centralized database to receive timely notices of upcoming affordable developments.

Rose Noonan, executive director of the Housing Action Council, said of the expo: "This is a great way for people who are ready for homeownership now – or want to be ready for it in the future -- to gather the information they need about housing opportunities."

Geoffrey Anderson, executive director of Westchester Residential Opportunities, Inc., called the expo " the perfect opportunity and setting for individuals to explore their housing options, and related resources in a less stressed environment."

Other sponsors of the expo are the Westchester Putnam Association of Realtors and Citibank.

The Housing Action Council and Westchester Residential Opportunities are non-profit homeownership counseling agencies. For more information, contact HAC at (914) 332-4144 or WRO at (914) 428-4507.
