Westchester County’s Department of Environmental Facilities’ (DEF) CompostED Facility honored with 2022 Engineering Excellence Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of New York

Westchester County’s newly opened CompostED Facility has been honored with the Silver Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of New York for its valuable contribution to the environmental field. The ACEC of New York’s Engineering Excellence Award recognizes the most outstanding achievements in the engineering profession.

County Executive George Latimer said: “This award shows – once again – the immense dedication our Department of Environmental Facilities team put into this project and the immense impact it will have on Westchester County as a whole. I commend the work done by Commissioner Vincent Kopicki and his team and congratulate the project on winning this award.”

The CompostED Facility, located on the Grasslands Campus in Valhalla, was conceptualized by the Department of Environmental Facilities and designed by Woodard & Curran.

Kopicki said: “Under the leadership of County Executive Latimer, our department has focused on ways to better prepare all of our facilities for a ‘green’ future. This is just another step in that process and we are grateful for the recognition.”

CompostEd offers a small-scale food scrap composting demonstration and education site and serves to raise awareness about food scrap recycling through composting. The Facility is designed to compost up to two tons of food scraps a week and provides a valuable educational opportunity for County residents, students, and municipal officials. CompostED, visitors will engage in hands-on learning experiences that explore the science and environmental benefits of composting.
