The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globe nominations have just been announced, and among the most celebrated films and television shows are productions that were shot right here in Westchester County.
County Executive George Latimer said: “From period pieces to crime dramas, or comedies to political thrillers, Westchester County locations can’t be beat. The Golden Globe nominations shine a spotlight on our diverse locations and film-friendly climate. We congratulate all the creative talent and will be cheering them on in January.”
The Netflix drama, “The Irishman,” which follows the career of mob hitman Frank Sheeran and his relationship with union boss Jimmy Hoffa, racked up five nominations, including “Best Motion Picture,” “Best Performance by an Actor” for Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, “Best Director” for Martin Scorsese, and “Best Screenplay” for Steven Zaillian. Westchester filming locations include the City of White Plains, V.E. Macy Park in Irvington, and City Hall in Yonkers, among others.
This year’s nominees also include the acclaimed limited series “Fosse/Verdon” (FX), about the creative partnership between choreographer Bob Fosse and actress and dancer Gwen Verdon, which filmed scenes at the Performing Arts Center, Purchase College, among other locations; and “Mr. Robot” - a thriller about a young computer programmer who works as a cybersecurity engineer by day and a vigilante hacker by night. The popular series filmed scenes at locations throughout the County, such as Kensico Dam Plaza and in the City of Rye.
Not only is it exciting to see Westchester’s backdrops featured in award-winning productions, but it is also good to know that all the filming activity brings an economic benefit to the region.
Inquiries from location scouts about Westchester locations are up 28 percent, year to date, over last year, and production days are up 40 percent. In addition, revenue from film permitting at county-owned properties is up more than 70 percent.
Westchester County Tourism & Film Director Natasha Caputo said: “There is a healthy revenue stream for Westchester County and local communities, which also benefit from film and television production, from this industry that generates $30 million in economic impact in the County.”
Latimer adds: “We are experiencing a film boom in Westchester County. Film is an important economic driver for Westchester County; we are committed to growing the industry here.”
With convenient proximity to New York City, varied landscapes and locations, and a responsive film office, Westchester County has become a hot destination for recent productions, as seen in the industry’s growth this year.
