Statement on school sports and vaccination efforts.

School Sports

During his bi-weekly press conference, County Executive George Latimer spoke on the Governor’s decision to allow local County health departments to make a decision on the playing of ‘high-risk’ sports during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Latimer said: “The Governor has tasked local county health departments with making the decision on whether or not high school sports can resume. It is quite the decision, but we are happy to have responsibility in these areas. Reopening high school sports has a multiple number of issues involved. This morning, as a part of our weekly call with school superintendents, we have tasked them with compiling data on some key areas that represents how we could go about opening up high school sports both safely and properly – if that is the route we go.”

Latimer said he aims to have a joint decision with other County Executives in the Hudson Valley that comprise the Section One high school sports conference announced by the end of this week.

Vaccination Efforts

Latimer outlined his efforts to ensure those on the front lines of law enforcement are gaining access to the vaccine. During his briefing, Latimer showed a short clip with Westchester Correction Officers Benevolent Association President Neil Pellone on the vaccination of the men and women of the County’s Department of Correction.
