November 27, 2018 – “Today is a historic day for New York State as Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins is elected the first female Majority Leader of the New York State Senate. Today is also a day which Westchester residents should feel immensely proud that one of our own will be taking on this important role.

“For Sen. Stewart-Cousins, it has been long road to this point. From her electoral beginnings in 1995 when she won a primary for Westchester County Legislator and served on the County Board of Legislators crafting important pieces of legislation such as the creation of the Human Rights Commission, to her tough Senate race in 2004 losing by a mere 18 votes, followed by her determined comeback to win in 2006, and continuing with her ascension to the leadership of the Senate Democrats six years ago in 2012.

“Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins has overcome all the challenges she has faced in her career. Now, she has a chance to put those years of service to the test and lead a chamber in need of forward thinking – and to put another massive crack of her own in that glass ceiling. Westchester – and New York State – will be better served by her leadership.”
