The Westchester County Youth Bureau is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Lights On After-School. The day, October 24th, is a nationwide-event that brings together more than 8,000 events showcasing the important role of after-school programs in supporting youth, families, and communities.
Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “Westchester County joins communities across the County to highlight the impact of after-school programs. Many organizations such as non-profit youth centers, municipal youth bureaus, parks departments and faith-based groups receive funding from the County’s Youth Bureau. These funds ensure that children and youth have academic support, access to technology, performing arts, sports and field trips and other enriching opportunities. We are committed to providing high quality, safe environments for children and youth during unsupervised hours, when it is needed most.”
In celebration of the day, the County has released a video to highlight the Mount Vernon and White Plains youth programs. Both organizations serve hundreds of youth daily, and offer stimulating activities including homework help, STEM/STEAM projects, healthy cooking projects, girls’ empowerment, sports and computer gaming.
Westchester County Youth Bureau Executive Director Ernest McFadden said: “This year’s theme, ‘Bright Futures Start Here,’ underscores our commitment to providing students with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. Afterschool programs are essential for keeping kids safe, engaged, and on track for success. We encourage everyone to participate in Lights On After-School.”
