REQUIRED:  High school or possession of an equivalency diploma and six years of experience where the primary function of the position was in the purchasing of commodities, materials, supplies or equipment.

 

SUBSTITUTIONS:  College credits may be substituted at the rate of 30 credits* per year on a year for year basis for up to four years of the required experience.

 

**DEFINITION: Purchasing experience is defined as experience which includes determining customer requirements, reviewing specifications, participating in the bid process, evaluating offers, preparing contracts and/or purchase orders, and vendor relations and follow-up.  Experience limited to requisitioning or ordering from sales people is considered as qualifying experience, nor is clerical experience in the processing or preparation of purchase order forms.

Located in the Department of Health – New Rochelle: Under supervision, an incumbent of this class performs a wide variety of tasks providing clerical support and acts as an office assistant for a number of administrative or professional staff.  Independent action is exercised when routine procedures or clearly defined policies are involved. This position requires a full range of keyboarding skills in the operation of either a word processor and, in some cases, a standard typewriter. When operating word processing equipment, an incumbent is expected to maximize equipment capability in compiling correspondence, records, reports statistical information for various reports; setting up and maintaining automated records and filing systems, and in compiling information for management needs. A high degree of initiative and independent action is required to ensure the timely and accurate processing of the workflow. This position differs from Senior Information Systems Clerk in that the Office Assistant is required to have full knowledge of word processing equipment in order to produce a full range of correspondence and reports, in addition to providing general office support to professional and/or administrative staff.  Supervision may be exercised over a small number of subordinate personnel.  Flexibility of hours may be required.  Duties require proficiency in both Spanish and English, providing interpretive and information services.  Does related work as required.

 

REQUIRED:  Possession of a high school or equivalency diploma and three years of experience where a primary function of the position was performing general office/clerical work, two years of which must have included the use of computer applications to maintain automated records or produce correspondence, spreadsheets, forms, reports or other documents.

 

SUBSTITUTION: Satisfactory completion of 30 credits* at a recognized college or university, or its equivalent in course hours from an approved institution or office software manufacturer (i.e. Microsoft) may be substituted on a year for year basis for one year of the general office/clerical experience and one year of the specialized experience using computer applications as described above. Completion of 6 credits* in word processing coursework at a recognized college or university may be substituted for an additional one year of specialized experience using computer applications as described above.  All coursework must be verified by official transcript.

Located in the Department of Laboratories and Research – Valhalla: Under general supervision of the Medical Examiner, an incumbent of this class supervises the operation and personnel in the Medical Investigator section of the Medical Examiner’s Office.  The incumbent supervises the performance of the independent and confidential investigations of deaths resulting from criminal, suspicious or undetermined causes.  The procedures performed at this level are of a highly specialized nature and incumbents must be proficient in all of the specialized technical and scientific aspects involved to be able to both perform the analysis and provide technical consultation and guidance to others.  The incumbent is responsible for the technical training and supervision of subordinate personnel. Responsibility also involves ensuring the receipt, recording, grouping, and labeling of specimens and the communication of test results.  Tours of duty cover any period of day, night, weekends and holidays.  The incumbent may be called in for any county emergency.  Does related work as required.

 

REQUIRED:  Either:  (a) a Bachelor's Degree* or a Master’s Degree* in Forensic Science or closely related field and one year of experience in a Medical Examiner’s office where a primary function of the position was performing independent and confidential investigations of deaths resulting from criminal, suspicious or undetermined causes; or (b) a Bachelor's Degree* in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or healthcare related field, or Criminal Justice and two years of experience as stated in (a); or (c) an Associate's Degree* in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or healthcare related field, or Criminal Justice and four years of experience as stated in (a); or (d) certification as a paramedic issued by an accredited training institution and one year of experience as a paramedic and two years of experience  where a primary function of the position was performing independent and confidential investigations of deaths resulting from criminal, suspicious or undetermined causes; or (e) possession of licensure and current registration issued by the State of New York to practice as a registered nurse and two years of experience as stated in (a).

 

SUBSTITUTIONS:  Satisfactory completion of 30 credits* towards a Master’s Degree* in Forensic Science or closely related field, may be substituted for one year of the above stated experience in options (b) through (e).

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State, and maintain same while in the title.
