Residents will learn how to prepare, respond and recover from emergencies and receive free preparedness kit.

The Westchester County Department of Emergency Services (WCDES), in partnership with the New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (NYS DHSES), will host a free Citizen Preparedness Corps training session on October 15 at 6 p.m. at the County’s Fire Training Center at 4 Dana Road, Valhalla.

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “With severe weather events becoming more frequent and extreme, it’s more important than ever that we help our community members be prepared. This free training will introduce residents to the critical tools needed for responding to a range of natural or man-made emergencies -- when every second counts and knowing what to do before, during or after a disaster can save lives. Westchester County is committed to protecting our families and keeping our communities safe and I encourage all residents to take advantage of this important resource and get your free Preparedness Kit.”

The Citizen Preparedness Corps training is designed to give residents the tools and resources to plan, respond appropriately and recover quickly from any type of emergency or disaster. The session will cover the types of risks and hazards New Yorkers face, how to develop household emergency plans and what supplies to keep on hand. Each participating family will receive one free preparedness kit, or “go-bag,” at the end of the course.

WCDES Commissioner Susan Spear said: “This program provides a great opportunity to learn the basics of preparing for emergencies. It’s free, it’s practical, and it’s one of the simplest ways you can learn to protect yourself and your loved ones. You will also receive a free ‘go-bag,’ which is essential to being prepared for an emergency. We encourage you to sign up today.”

Registration is required to participate. Residents can sign up for the free Oct. 15 Citizen Preparedness Corps Training in Valhalla from 6 to 7:30 p.m. by registering here
