TANF Funded Programs

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funding was created as a new federal block grant in 1996 to replace Aid to Families with Dependent Children. This funding can be spent on a wide variety of services and benefits for low-income families. The four purposes of TANF are:

  • To provide assistance to needy families so that the children may be cared for in their homes or the homes of relatives;

  • To end dependence of needy parents on government benefits by promoting job preparation, work and marriage;\

  • Prevent and reduce the incidence of out-of-wedlock pregnancies and establish annual numerical goals for preventing and reducing the incidence of these pregnancies;

  • To encourage the formation and maintenance of two-parent families.
