February 12: Higher education (national). Applications for college scholarships from the Horace Mann Companies, which benefit the children of employees of public and private schools and higher-education institutions. Twenty $1,000 scholarships, five $4,000 scholarships, and one $10,000 scholarship will be awarded. Who may apply: college-bound high-school seniors with a parent or legal guardian who is a full- or part-time employee of a U.S. public or private school district or U.S. public or private college or university. Applicants must have at least a cumulative B average or equivalent overall grade point average and score at least a 23 on the ACT or a combined 1,100 on the SAT.
