The Westchester County Parks Commission was created in 1922, with
a separate Recreation Commission established in 1924. In
addition, during the first few decades of the 20th century,
various parkway authorities existed to oversee the building of the
many highways that now traverse up and down Westchester
County. A separate authority also existed to
administer Playland. In the latter part of the century,
these separate entities were either abolished entirely, or
eventually subordinated to the Parks, Recreation and Conservation
Department, created in 1962. The series included in this
record group provide extensive documentation on the development of
Westchester County's parks, the functioning of the Parks
Commission, the construction of the Bronx River Parkway, and
operations at Playland. Several photographic
collections also complement these record series. |
