Protect our Water: Have your septic system checked regularly.

Septic systems purify household waste in places where there are no sanitary sewers. If they are not working properly, they can pollute our water and kill aquatic life. Be sure yours isn't failing.

Follow these tips to keep your septic system operating properly:

  • Look for signs of failure including slow drainage, sewage backup, unpleasant odors or lush grass around system.

  • Pump out tank every two to three years.

  • Maintain system by watching what goes down the drain.

  • Use phosphate-free detergents, install low-flow plumbing fixtures that conserve water and don't put grease, oil or household chemicals down the drain.

  • Limit the use of food grinders.

As of April 2002, Westchester County will begin training and licensing septic system contractors.  To learn more about Westchester's new licensing requirement click here… http://www.westchestergov.com/health/SepticSystemManagement.htm
