Late fall is an especially exciting time in the Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS), and our activities are in high gear.

Late fall is the time to get your annual flu shots, and it's especially important seniors receive this protection.

Today, one in five Westchester County residents - about 167,000 people - is 60 or older.  That number is expected to jump to 230,000 by 2020 as more Baby Boomers join the ranks of the 60-plus population.

The Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services funds or provides supplemental funding for a wide range of  DSPS programs, which enrich the quality of life for older adults and their families.  The Partnership recently updated its Web site with more information about the projects it underwrites and color photos of seniors at many of those activities.

One of the Partnership’s most recent projects that it co-sponsors with Westchester County is the multiyear Livable Communities: A Vision for All Ages initiative. Livable Communities enable seniors to age with independence and dignity in their home communities.

DSPS also provides information on the "basics."  Do you have questions about Medicare, senior housing or help for caregivers?  We have answers.  Likewise for adult day care services (for medical and psychiatric needs) in the area as well as long-term care and long-term care insurance.

You can also use this Website to learn about our Campaign to Stop Elder Abuse.

In addition, DSPS offers many free publications such as the "Directory of Services Rights & Benefits for Senior Citizens in Westchester County."  "The Financial Benefits & Savings Guide" is also helpful as is the "Senior Citizen Guide to Mental Health Services" and a "Guide for Caregivers: Respite Services and Caregiver Support Groups."

We also have literature for seniors in Spanish such as the Generaciones Veranos newsletter.

To learn more about what DSPS offers, call our information and referral staff at (914) 813-6400.  If they cannot answer your questions, they'll refer you to the person on the DSPS staff who can.
