The wildfires that spread across southern California this fall forced residents to quickly evacuate their homes and find shelter with family and friends. If an emergency occurred in Westchester, what would you do? It is critical that you and your family take the time now to get prepared.
Go Bags: If you have to evacuate your home immediately, do you have a bag filled with the important items you will need? Take the time now to pack a bag with water, non-perishable food, medications, money and important personal documents.
Emergency Plan: If you and your spouse are at work, and your children are at the park and the mall, where will you all meet if there is an emergency in your neighborhood? What out-of town friend or family member will you stay with? These are the questions you need to ask now, as you sit down and work on an emergency plan for your family.
Keeping Westchester safe is a top priority for County Executive Andy Spano, and requires the cooperative efforts of several departments, including Emergency Services, Public Safety, Correction, and Probation. Whether it's severe weather or an incident at Indian Point, Westchester County government takes these threats seriously by developing and practicing plans to deal with emergencies.
The county’s Protect the Kids Committee has programs to protect children from sexual predators, including the Innoculating our Children Against Sexual Abuse and Preventing Abduction workshops. The county has adopted the Code Adam child-finding system in all of its parks and county facilities. The county has also been at the forefront of efforts to fight bullying in general and cyber-bullying in particular. Other programs are aimed at stopping drunk-driving and underage drinking and preventing youth violence.
