Water and Air Quality
Whether it is the water we drink or the water in which we swim, our water is a precious resource that must be protected. The county works with federal, state, and New York City agencies to preserve our waterways, whether it’s Long Island Sound, the Hudson River, or our reservoirs. Many non-profit agencies play a major part in this effort as well. Find out what you can do to keep our waters clean.
The Westchester County Citizen Volunteer Monitoring Program was established in 2003 in order to create a baseline of water quality data on streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. Volunteers, whom the county trains, take water samples.
The Westchester County Department of Planning and the Soil and Water Conservation District have ongoing projects to restore various streams and habitats in the county. As more resources are restored, water quality will continue to improve and a more diverse community of plants and animals will be established.
