What is Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center?
Hilltop Hanover Farm and Environmental Center was purchased in 2003 by Westchester County with the objective to preserve open space, protect drinking water and promote environmental education. The farm consists of 187 acres of forest, pastures and historic building. The land dates back to the1600’s when the Underhill Family owned the property.
The County Planning Department has the responsibility of managing and developing the property, along with promoting environmental educational through the day-to-day operations at the farm that steer a course towards becoming a regional environmental resource center. There are several “farm partners” that operate at the farm all helping to promote the goals of sustainable agriculture and responsible environmental practices through farm operations and educational classes.
The many reasons you should visit Hilltop Hanover Farm
The 187 acres of land is magical, very beautiful and not to mention diverse. There are 120 acres of wooded trails to explore, with extraordinary glacial remains, quartz deposits and vernal ponds that will capture a hiker’s heart. The farm area with pastures, fields and historic buildings provides the visitor with a glimpse of the past and a pathway to the future. Preserving our farming history by utilizing responsible environmental techniques connects us to our future and connects us to the land and our environment. In our society we are so removed from the land and how our food is grown. One of our goals at Hilltop is to provide that connection, through education and by example. Enroll your children in some of the wonderful environmental and farm classes, volunteer your time in the fields to provide produce for soup kitchens, connect with neighbors, make new friends, visit the animals, watch the sunsets and hike the trails and stay tuned for the many wonderful events and the bright future of Hilltop Hanover Farm.
How you can help
The County purchased this property with the hopes of building a community based initiative that would help build and support the farm. If you would like to become part of that community, give us a call, stop by or drop us a line. We need volunteers in the field, behind the scenes, new comers to agriculture and seasoned veterans, young and old a like. Hilltop Hanover is a “place” an “idea” that we can all build together. Help us bridge that path between past and future, help us connect to the earth and protect our planet.
Hours of operation & Directions
Hilltop Hanover Farm is open year-round and together with the “farm partners” offers a full schedule of programs for families, as well as tours for groups by reservation. There are more than 3.5 miles of hiking trails allow visitors to explore some of Hilltop 120 acres of woodlands and wetlands. Trail maps are available at the Main House ‘Building A’. For the protection of our animals and our visitors, petting and feeding of the farm animals is not permitted and dogs are not allowed.
Please make your visit the best and safest by checking your clothes and yourself for unwanted hitchhikers like ticks. You should wear clothing and shoes appropriate for a day out on the farm or hiking in the woods. Please have fun exploring the farm but we ask you to respect our farmers’ work, and our animals and crops by keeping a safe distance, as this is a working farm. We have a “do not pet our animals” policy. This is for our animals’ safety as well as our visitors.
Hilltop Hanover is open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
