  • Birth Certificate issued and certified by a Board of Health or Bureau of Vital Statistics in the U.S., its territories or possessions. Foreign birth certificates are not acceptable.
  • U.S. Military Photo Identification Card
  • U.S. Passport
  • Foreign Passport (with INS documentation) or Immigration Documents - See the publication Proofs of Identity (ID-44) for details.

How do I know if I'm ready to take my road test?

If you have all of the following....then you are ready!

  • A valid NYS learner permit. Your permit must be valid on the date that you make your appointment and on the date that you take your road test.

  • A valid pre-licensing course certificate (MV-278) or a valid driver education certificate (MV-285). An MV-278 certificate is valid for one year after the date of issue. An MV-285 certificate is valid for two years after the date of issue. If your MV-278 certificate expires, you must complete another pre-licensing course to receive a valid certificate and to schedule a road test. Your certificate must be valid on the date that you make your appointment, but can be expired on the date of your road test.
  • If you have a valid NYS driver license in another license class, you do not need a pre-licensing course certificate or driver education certificate.

Do you have any tips to help me on my road test day?

These tips will help you....

  • Be on time. If you are late, your test can be canceled.
  • Bring your photo learner permit. If you have not received your photo learner permit in the mail, bring your interim learner permit and other proofs of identity to comply with the identification requirements.
  • Bring your pre-licensing course certificate (MV-278) or driver education certificate (MV-285).
  • Confirm that the driver who comes to the test with you has a valid driver license and can operate the test vehicle.
  • Confirm that the vehicle you bring for the test has a current registration and a valid inspection sticker.
  • Confirm that the vehicle operates properly. Check the seat belts, headlights, doors and other equipment to confirm that they also operate properly.
  • In Addition: If you got your class DJ or MJ learner permit after September 1, 2003 you must bring form MV-262 (Certification of 20 Hours of Driving Experience) unless you are 17 years of age and have an MV-285 (Student Certificate of Completion).

Motor vehicle crashes are the most likely to cause severe bodily injury to young drivers.                                     Three seconds is all it takes to save your face or your life.              That is how long it takes to put your seat belt on.
