WHO:

  • Each high school in Westchester was encouraged to send four students: two athletes (male and female) and two student leaders (male and female).

  • Schools also sent athletic directors, gym teachers, coaches, health teachers and principals.

WHEN: Oct. 24, 2005.

WHERE: The Westchester  County Center.

WHY:   Barely a week passes without media accounts of yet another athlete who used steroids or other performance-enhancing supplements. What once was rare and just done by elite athletes has now trickled down to the amateur ranks of high schools athletes and even non athletes.

Recent national surveys indicate that steroids and supplements are being used by an increasing number of youth, both boys and girls. There is some evidence that Westchester County may be following this national trend.
