Travel Information Bulletin
January 2002

As we usher in the new year, there are a number of issues that remain unresolved: getting a handle on the sluggish economy; restoring safety in the public domain; improving mobility on our roads and highways; improving the quality of the air we breathe; bringing the stress of the commute to work to the barest minimum.

In the year 2002, the SMART COMMUTE Program will continue its effort to mitigate congestion on our roads and highways, and to work with corporate worksites to improve the commute to work and enhance the quality of life for Westchester employees.  We believe that employees can, armed with good commute information, make very wise commute choices. We believe that employees’ commute choices can be enhanced when employers provide incentives, disincentives and commuter choice initiatives at the workplace. A New York News editorial on the success of Manhattan’s carpool rule observed that “the city has learned that commuter habits can be changed.  Commuters themselves have learned to adjust.  It would be a shame to revert to old ways – and traffic jammed streets – just when actual and long-lasting benefits are being realized.”

Our ability to provide employee commute services in the new year will be greatly enhanced by a new collaborative effort with Metropool, Inc., a Stamford, CT based company that provides carpool, vanpool and commuter choice services in the region.  Under a new demonstration contract with the N.Y. State Department of Transportation, Metropool will be spearheading an effort to provide vanpool services on the I-287 corridor.  This new effort will seek to bridge some of the transit service gap on this corridor.  At the same time, we will continue to bring you improved public transit services as well as transit connectivity within the region.  We are sending you a copy of our updated Transportation Services Guide.  Please feel free to ask for more copies.
