Rape is an act of violence, an attempt to control and degrade another by
using sex as a weapon.

WHO CAN BE RAPED?

  • Working women, wives, mothers, grandmothers, children, students, wealthy or poor, men and boys - anyone.

  • Class mates, co-workers, a neighbor, delivery person, attractive or      unattractive, outgoing or shy, often a friend or family member-anyone.

Practice these safety tips to minimize your risk of Rape.

  • Be alert and walk with confidence.  Be aware of your surroundings;      know who's around and what's going on.

  • In general, don't let alcohol or other drugs impair your judgment.  If a situation or place makes you feel uncomfortable or uneasy, leave.

  • Make sure all doors and windows have dead bolt locks and use them.     This goes for sliding doors too.

  • Install a peephole in the door and keep entrances well-lighted.

  • Never open your door to strangers; offer to make an emergency call while they wait outside.

  • Check the identification of any service or sales people or police officers     before letting them in.  Don't be embarrassed to phone for verification.

  • Be wary of isolated spots such as laundry rooms, underground garages, parking lots and deserted business offices.

  • Know your neighbors so you have someone to call or go to if you are frightened.  If you come home and see a door or window open or broken, DON'T GO IN.  Call the police from you cell or a public phone or from a neighbor's home.

  • Avoid walking or jogging alone, especially at night.  Stay in well-lit areas.

  • Be leery if anyone in a car asks you for directions; keep your distance     from the car.

  • Have your key ready before you reach the door for car, home or office.  If you think you are being followed, change the direction and head for open stores, restaurants, theaters or anywhere people are. Choose a parking area that will be well-lit and well-traveled upon your return.

  • Avoid parking next to a van with side panels, if possible.

  • Always lock your car when either getting in or out.

  • Look around your car and in the back seat before you get in.

  • If your car beaks down, lift the hood, lock the doors and turn on flashers.  Use a "call police" banner or flares.

  • If someone stops, roll the window down slightly and ask the person to call the police or a towing service.

  • DO NOT HITCHHIKE, EVER!  Do not pick up a hitchhiker.

If you are raped, CALL 9-1-1.
