The Westchester County Department of Human Resources administers the Police Officer examination used to fill vacancies in the Department of Public Safety Services, the Cities of Peekskill and Rye and the towns and villages within the County.  The Cities of Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, White Plains
and Yonkers each hold their own separate examination.

The position of Police Officer is considered to be a Public Officer and must
meet all applicable provisions of the New York State Public Officers Law.  Minimum standards for Police Officer are established in accordance with Section 58 of the New York State Civil Service Law and the New York State Public Officers Law.

 

Basic requirements are as follows:

 

  • Must be a citizen of the United States at time of appointment. 
  • Must have a high school diploma at the time of examination.
  • Must possess a current New York State Drivers License at the time 
    of appointment.
  • Minimum age at time of appointment is twenty (20) years of age.  Maximum age effective April 1999, eligibility for participation in the examination ends on the 35th birthday, unless a veteran as defined by New York State Law.

In addition to the above, there are medical and physical agility standards set by
the Municipal Police Training Council that must be met in order to achieve a
permanent appointment as a Police Officer.  The official announcement for Police
Officer will detail the requirements necessary to complete the examination and
appointment process.
