The Citizen
Police Academy is a 10-week program designed to give
members of the public a working knowledge of the Westchester
County Department of Public Safety and the criminal justice
system it serves. It consists of a series of classes and
discussions held once per week, on a designated evening,
from 6 PM – 9PM. The classes are geared to provide an in-depth view into various areas of law enforcement. It is an educational and informative program that allows citizens, and our elected officials, the opportunity to learn about the issues facing law enforcement, how we train to handle them and how to develop a partnership between the police and the community. Instructors for the classes will be selected from the cadre of certified police instructors of the Department of Public Safety. The Department has a number of officers who specialize in the areas and topics to be discussed, and have vast amount of teaching experience. Classes will be held at County Police Headquarters or at the County Police Training Academy, depending on the topic to be discussed. Scheduling will be worked out at a later date.

BENEFITS Community Oriented Policing plays an integral role in reducing crime and improving quality of life in any community. The Citizen Police Academy will be instituted with this idea in mind to obtain the input of the residents in developing an understanding of policing problems and solutions. Upon taking a more personal interest in their town, and the protection of their community and neighborhoods, residents will enjoy a safer and closer relationship with their neighbors and the police. Upon completion of the course, graduates will receive a certificate of completion, and class photo. In addition, they will be provided a list of their fellow students with an eye toward fostering their continued relationships vis-à-vis a safe community. A Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association will provide an additional forum in which law enforcement issues can be discussed and examined in the realm of continuing education.
