It may be windy and cold outside, but you still have indoor choices as a way to stay in shape.
Join a mall walking club at your local shopping mall. Be Fit at the Westchester and the Galleria in White Plains both have clubs.
Walking offers many advantages as a form of exercise.
It is one the simplest and most convenient forms of physical activity. All you need is a good pair of shoes, comfortable clothing, and desire. Walking is an aerobic exercise that conditions your heart and lungs. It’s best to walk vigorously for 30-60 minutes five times a week. But even low- to moderate- intensity walking can have both short- and long-term health benefits.
What are some of the benefits of mall walking?
- You can participate regardless of the weather: Inside a climate-controlled mall, walkers can dress comfortably and not worry about wind, rain, snow, ice, heat.
- You will be away from traffic: There are no intersections to cross, no obstructions on the path or auto fumes.
- Availability of security: Walking in a group with mall security personnel on duty is optimally safe.
- Availability of restrooms and water: These necessities are always nearby in the mall.
In addition, some mall walking clubs schedule informational seminars on health, exercise, and nutrition topics. Special incentives for walkers (prizes, coupons, tee shirts, pedometers) may also be available.
You will be more likely to keep walking if you enjoy the activity and can find creative ways to maintain interest. Here are some tips for making your routine more enjoyable:
- Walk with a friend. It’s a good opportunity to chat with one another.
- Window shop. Keep an eye out for sales and bargains at your favorite stores.
- Listen to music. Make a tape or CD of music you enjoy and bring along a portable player.
- Make plans for after your walk. You’ll be even more motivated if you have something special to look forward to afterwards, such as a cup of coffee with another walker.
- Set personal goals. Think about when and how to increase the frequency, duration and intensity of your walks to aim for a personal best.
Be sure to check with your doctor before beginning any exercise program, especially if you are over 40 years old, smoke, have pre-existing injuries or any problems related to blood pressure, your heart or diabetes.
We look forward to seeing you on Tuesdays and Fridays at The Westchester!
