E-Waste Day – or Electronic Waste Day – is organized by Westchester County in cooperation with local municipalities.
E-Waste Days are scheduled year round and the Mobile Shredder will be on location at several of these events. Consult the schedule of E-Waste Days, Household Recycling Days and Mobile Shredder appearances for more details.
E-Waste days provide a public service to residents. By collecting harmful cathode ray tubes, which are found in televisions and computer monitors, and toxic heavy metals and chemicals, which are found in computer equipment, we're putting a halt to contaminating our land and water resources.
Residents may bring old computer monitors, TVs, stereos, copiers, fax machines as well as computer towers and other small electric appliances such as phones, toasters, blenders, radios, speakers and lamps for recycling. Large household appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, freezers, air-conditioners, washers and dryers are now being accepted. Don't forget you can also bring old or used compact fluorescent light bulbs.
If you have electronics equipment that is repairable or still usable, you might want to consider donating or selling it to someone who may want to use it. Components that cannot be repaired should be recycled by dropping them off at an E-Waste Day. Remember that many electronic products (computers, cell phones, PDAs, etc.) are used to store personal information. Before donating or recycling your equipment, remove all sensitive and personal information from its memory. Note that simply using your keyboard or mouse to delete files does not completely erase the information from your computer’s hard drive. Your local software store can provide you with the necessary drive-cleaning software appropriate for your system.
Local businesses, schools and institutions should use the Electronics Recycling Markets list of known CRT recyclers or contact the county's Recycling Help Line via e-mail at sso3@westchestergov.com or call 211 for further information.
