  • Offers an alternative travel route to major highways

  • Tells a story about New York State's heritage

  • Connects special natural, scenic, cultural, historic, archaeological or recreational features

  • Designated by a locally-driven nomination process

  • A possible method to stimulate economic development through tourism and recreation

  • Any length, urban or rural.

What is the Hudson River Valley Scenic Byways Project?

The Hudson River Valley Scenic Byways project is a program of the Hudson River Valley Greenway (HRVG), under a grant from the Federal Highway Administration, to explore the potential for a system of scenic byways in the Hudson River Valley. Westchester County is serving as a local coordinator to the Scenic Byways Steering Committee that is conducting:
  • Public workshops that will educate citizens about byways

  • An inventory of roads to be considered for designation and an assessment of their features.

The results of this project will include:

  • Recommended criteria to evaluate and rank proposed byways.

  • Guidelines for localities seeking Greenway model byways grants.

  • A list of potential byways and byway groups.
