Watersheds

Watersheds are affected by the your land use activities.

Every single piece of land belongs to a watershed. A watershed is the land area that drains water into the same waterbody, such as a stream or a wetland. There are six major watersheds in Westchester County.

Each of these watersheds consists of an area of land that drains into its respective large waterbody, i.e. the Croton Watershed drains into the Croton River.

Subwatersheds

Like all watersheds, the Croton Watershed can be broken down into smaller watersheds, called subwatersheds. A subwatershed is an area of land that drains into a body of water before entering the larger body of water, in this example the Croton River. An example is the area of land that drains water into the Titicus River, the Titicus River Subwatershed. The Titicus River then drains into the Croton River, so it is a subwatershed of the Croton Watershed.
