Environmental
Management Council
The Environmental Management Council is a focal point
for the citizen environmental advisory role in County government. The duties of the
Council are to provide environmental information, advice, assistance and training; review
and comment on pending actions within the county which have environmental implications;
advise County government on environmental protection policies and sound use of natural
resources; prepare reports, maps and publications; and maintain a database and library.

Rob Doscher, certified wetland specialist and a staff member of
the County Planning Department, leads a group of EMC members on a field trip at the Rye
Nature Center as part of the Natural Resource inventory training sessions conducted by the
EMC.

Council
Membership
The membership of the Council is made up of the following major groups:
- Representatives from municipal citizen conservation councils and boards (municipalities
without a council or board may appoint a representative to the EMC).
- Representatives from County government advisory boards (Health, Parks and Planning).
- Members-at-large appointed for their special interest or qualifications.
- Commissioners of the departments of Environmental Facilities, Health, Parks, Planning
and Public Works.
- Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Directors
- Representative from the County Board of Legislators
The Council meets at least four times per year to discuss issues of interest to the
general membership.
EMC Committees
The EMC is currently working to put together committees to
work on areas of interest to members. Any EMC or Conservation Council or
Board member interested in joining a committee should contact the office.
The committees in formation are: Open Space; Water Resources; Pesticides;
and Education. All members are encouraged to make their voices heard and
help County government make important environmental decisions.
