STONEWALLING:
STRATEGIES REGARDING STONE WALL PRESERVATION

Over 90 people from the Hudson Valley and Connecticut attended the 2003 "Stonewalling" Conference at the John Jay Homestead in Katonah, NY.  Participants learned how to identify, assess, landmark and preserve stone walls and were given the opportunity to share their experiences in working to protect stone walls within their community. The Conference was presented by the County Planning Department, Westchester County Historic Preservation Advisory Committee, the Westchester County Historical Society, the Westchester Municipal Planning Federation, the Jay Heritage Center, and the John Jay Homestead State Historic Site.

Guest speakers included Susan Allport, author of Sermons in Stone – The Stone Walls of New England and New York; Robert Thorson, author of Stone By Stone – The Magnificent History in New England’s Stone Walls and founder of the Stone Wall Initiative; Joan Berkowitz, preservation specialist and principal of Jablonski Berkowitz Conservation, Inc.; and Stacey Matson-Zuvik of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
