Municipal Parks

Every year, the Design Section works with municipal officials and neighborhood committees to develop concepts for playground improvements. Once a concept for a playground is approved by these participants, the Design Section prepares construction drawings and assists the municipality in the bidding process.

As with any playground, the initial intention is to create a safe and enjoyable place for children to play. In developing a playground design, however, the Design Section also takes into consideration other features, such as places for parents to sit, equipment that appeals to many ages, and an open, inviting atmosphere.

Funding for these projects comes from the Community Development Block Grant program which is administered through the Department of Planning on behalf of the municipalities in Westchester. These grants are used in low- to moderate-income areas to rehabilitate neighborhoods, including playgrounds and streetscapes.

The accompanying pictures show recently constructed projects by the Design Section.
