Geographic Information Systems Mapping

GIS technology is a powerful tool for mapping, visualizing and analyzing geographic data that is the foundation for making sound planning decisions. Planners use GIS for a wide range of applications ranging from very specific site analysis for open space acquisition projects to regional analyses of land use patterns for environmental, transportation and related initiatives. The acquisition of digital aerial orthophotos along with derived planimetric and topographic data layers has greatly enhanced the way planners see and map our surrounding environs.

The aerial photo (left) shows Hutchinson River Pathway infrastructure in the vicinity of Mill Road in the Town of Eastchester. Using GPS (Global Positioning Systems) trail planners were able to accurately capture and map the location of the pathway and overlay it on color digital orthophotography.

The update of a countywide GIS zoning layer (left) based on a composite of 43 local zoning maps is greatly enhanced and enabled by the use of new digital aerial photos and derived planimetric data such as building outlines, lot lines and other natural and man-made features which allow for the adjustment of zoning boundaries to more accurately match these features.

The Planning Department maintains a wide array of printed maps and aerial photos which are available for viewing or purchase..  Click here for a map list.
