Read Wildlife Sanctuary
is a 179-acre park located along the Long Island Sound adjacent to
Playland in Rye, New York. Environmental education programs are
offered to schools, scouts and other groups by advance
reservation. Group size is limited to 30, and there is a modest
fee based on group size and length of program. Topics can be
tailored to the needs and interests of the group and include:
intertidal ecology, marine biology, plant science and ornithology.
Explore
the Shore
By far our most popular program. Participants learn about
tides and the ecology of Long Island Sound. A ramble along the
rocky intertidal coast will be followed by a discussion of what species
were found. Offered during low tides only. Grades K-Adult
Native
Americans in Rye
The
Siwanoy, part of the Mohegan Confederacy, were living on what is now
Manursing Island long before the settlers arrived from the Old
World. Participants will take a look at how they lived, and
discover the tools, toys, food, trade, and the various daily routines
that were so different from how we live today.

Outdoors
Together
Children can make a new nature discovery each week. We will
learn about the nature in the park through hands-on exploration and
crafts covering everything from Aspen trees to Zebra Mussels.
Classes run every Thursday for eight weeks in the Fall, Winter and
Spring. Choose from two sessions: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 1:00
p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Limited enrollment. Grades Pre K-K
For
the Birds
As an Important Bird Area, Read Sanctuary plays host to a wide
variety of birds year round. Join us in this three-part series as
we discuss the basics of birds and birding. We'll take a look at
the various avian inhabitants during fall and spring migrations, as well
as our wintering residents. Learn about bird identification
through sight and sound, adaptation, and migrations of our feathered
friends. Grades 3-Adult
