IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

In 2004 and 2005 a number of projects were completed or in design to preserve or upgrade the facilities and intricate infrastructure of the parkway, which was opened in 1925.

In December of 2004, the county Board of Legislators approved the County Executive’s proposed capital projects budget, which includes the following:

Projects Ready for Construction

  • Ground was broken in August of 2005 for the re-routing of the Bronx River Pathway in White Plains. The re-routing is part of a larger rehabilitation capital project for the entire five-mile north section, which runs from Greenacres Avenue in Scarsdale, north to the Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. The project includes rebuilding pedestrian bridges, some stream bank stabilization, resurfacing of the existing pathway, constructing a new alignment in White Plains and storm water control. Total cost is estimated at $1.7 million. The work is expected to be completed in the fall of 2006.

  • Resurfacing of parkway from Harney to Cemetery roads, including the deck rehabilitation of the Crane Road Bridge

  • Resurfacing of parkway from Fenimore Road in Hartsdale to Kensico Dam in Valhalla to begin in the fall of 2005), which includes guide rail repair along selected sections of the parkway.

  • New traffic signals and poles will be installed at various locations along the parkway.

  • A ball field at Virginia Road (construction scheduled to begin at the end of September).

Projects in Design

The County Planning Department has developed design plans to connect the “missing links” in the Bronx River pathway so that County Executive Andy Spano’s announced goal of one continuous pedestrian pathway from the Bronx border to Kensico Dam will be realized in the near future.

Other projects in the design stage include:

  • A new exit ramp from the parkway northbound to Yonkers Avenue and a median barrier from Cemetery Road to Lafayette Avenue, which will install a corrugated beam barrier within a four-foot curbed median.

  • Feasibility and cost to build the pathway from Scarsdale Train Station to Fenimore Road.

  • Pathway construction from Harney Road to Scarsdale Train Station (design pending New York State approval).

  • Design is underway to reconstruct the County Center parking lot area. Construction is slated to begin in 2006
