HAVE SOME FUN TODAY Everyone’s favorite family amusement park, Playland Park in Rye, opens for the season on Saturday, May 10. The entertainment begins at 11 a.m. and the park opens at 12 noon. Rain date for the event is Saturday, May 17. Playland’s rides will be open from noon until 9 p.m. Visitors can purchase a special Opening Day Fun Band for $15, which is good for unlimited rides all day. Fun Bands go on sale at the Fountain Plaza beginning at 10:30 a.m. The opening celebration begins with free strolling entertainment at the Fountain Plaza beginning at 11 a.m. followed by the traditional parade from Playland’s upper circle to the Fountain Plaza with the Port Chester High School Marching Band accompanied by local dignitaries, staff and Playland’s mascot Coaster the Dragon. The 95.5 WPLJ van will also be there with games and giveaways. Live on the Music Tower Theater stage, The Daytrippers will perform the very best of The Beatles during three lively shows at 2, 4 and 6 p.m. Playland Fun Cards can be purchased for the economical price of $20 for a 20-point Fun Card, which includes one free ride; $30 for a 30-point Fun Card which includes two free rides, and $50 for a 50-point Fun Card, which comes with four free rides. Single Fun Card points can be purchased for $1 each. Rides require 3 to 4 points each. After Opening Day, Playland offers a six-hour unlimited-ride Fun Band wristband for $35. New this year, Westchester County Park Pass holders can purchase Playland’s six-hour unlimited-ride Fun Band wristband for $25, a $10 savings off the regular price, all season long, up to five offers per visit. Park Pass holders can also purchase $30 Fun Cards and automatically receive two extra free rides (a total of four free rides) up to five offers per visit. Residents must present their valid Park Pass at time of purchase for either of these offers. Park Passes will be sold at the Park this season. And, in another new program, this one designed for extra convenience, Fun Cards purchased in 2008 can also be used to purchase food at Playland concessions that are located within the amusement park. Fun Cards are rechargeable at any sales booth or electronic kiosk. Playland is open Saturdays from noon to 9 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 8 p.m. until Memorial Day weekend. Admission to Playland is always free. Parking on weekends is $7 per car. Playland’s scenic Seaside Walk, a quiet section of the park that runs along Long Island Sound and affords beautiful vistas, will be open beginning Opening Day until Friday, May 16 on weekdays only, 7 a.m. to dusk. After May 16, the walk will be open during all park hours. The Seaside Walk is a 3/4-mile path which starts at the south boardwalk and ends at the north boardwalk near Playland Lake. Playland Beach will be closed during this period (beginning May 1) for cleanup and preparation for swimming season, and will reopen on Saturday, May 24. Playland, now celebrating its 80th season, is owned and operated by Westchester County Parks. Playland Park is America’s first totally planned amusement park and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
