Merestead: Hiking Trails

A 2.3-mile system of hiking trails is open at the Merestead property in Mount Kisco, thanks to the efforts of the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC).

At an opening ceremony held at Merestead Thursday, October 9, 2005 County Executive Andy Spano thanked the members of the YCC who worked on the project this summer: Jesse Deutsch, age 16, of Chappaqua; Troy Jenkins, 17, of Mount Kisco; Michael Walsh, 16, of Chappaqua; and Nancy Kellogg of Chappaqua, who accepted the honors on behalf of her son Dylan, 18, who is away at college.

Over a six-week period, the YCC restored 3,200 feet of old hiking trails and created 3,000 feet of new trail; rebuilt five bridges; restored two stone bridges; installed stepping stones in wet areas and built a retaining wall to prevent erosion; cleaned up two root cellars for public viewing; and cleared shrubs along the trail to open up panoramic view ways.

The new 2.3-mile trail system is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Merestead property is located on Byram Lake Road in Mount Kisco, and can be reached via I-684, exit 4 (Mount Kisco-Route 172). Head west on 172 for 1-1/2 miles. Turn left onto Sarles and follow to Byram Lake Road. Turn left for 4/10th of a mile to 455 Old Byram Lake Road.  Access to the trail system is located across the street from the main driveway to the property. Follow the signs to the parking lot.
