A
2.3-mile system of hiking trails is open at the Merestead property in
Mount Kisco, thanks to the efforts of the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC). At
an opening ceremony held at Merestead Thursday, October 9, 2005 County
Executive Andy Spano thanked the members of the YCC who worked on the
project this summer: Jesse Deutsch, age 16, of Chappaqua; Troy Jenkins,
17, of Mount Kisco; Michael Walsh, 16, of Chappaqua; and Nancy Kellogg
of Chappaqua, who accepted the honors on behalf of her son Dylan, 18,
who is away at college. Over a six-week period, the YCC restored 3,200 feet of old hiking trails and created 3,000 feet of new trail; rebuilt five bridges; restored two stone bridges; installed stepping stones in wet areas and built a retaining wall to prevent erosion; cleaned up two root cellars for public viewing; and cleared shrubs along the trail to open up panoramic view ways.
