Endangered Species List

Westchester County Department of Parks is the steward of over 18,000 acres of land and as such is the largest single owner of Natural Resources in the county.  Surveying and monitoring those resources is a major concern of the Conservation Division. Since 1985, the division has been systematically cataloguing the species found in the parks, checking historical records, and networking with other agencies to develop a biodiversity inventory.

After years of review, a list of rare and significant species was developed in an effort to conserve the ecosystems on which these species depend.  In 2000, the Board of Legislators adopted the Endangered Species Act with authorizes the Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation to establish a list of endangered species, threatened species and species of special concern, and to designate certain County Parkland as critical habitats or biodiversity reserves for the preservation of those species.
