Mamapalooza A Festival to Celebrate Women, Mothers and Families in Westchester
To benefit the Motherhood Foundation MAMAPALOOZA 2008 CELEBRATES WOMEN, MOTHERS AND FAMILIES IN WESTCHESTER
Women-empowering workshops and entertainment, shopping and fitness, culture and the arts are in store for women of all ages and their families during Mamapalooza 2008, a festival to celebrate women, mothers, and their families, on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. Mamapalooza 2008 invites women to enjoy a day of education and healing, music and the arts, health screenings and fitness activities – and shopping – to help them reclaim their “cool” through the power of self-expression and know-how. And don’t forget to bring your family – there’ll be plenty of activities for kids of all ages.
Workshops for Women Learn how to start your own business, from developing a budget and marketing plan during “Strut Your Stuff” presented by the Women’s Enterprise Development Center. This workshop will also be offered in Spanish. Then, learn how to manage your money and navigate your way through insurance, health care policies, retirement funds and other aspects of daily living during the “Power Babe” workshop. “Living Loud” provides tips for weathering and sailing through the various stages of a woman’s sexual life, and teen-age girls can learn the secrets of self-confidence during a self-esteem workshop. You even can learn how to browse, buy and sell using the popular online auction site eBay during a workshop presented by the United States Postal Service.
Health and Fitness Let yourself go during the art and dance “Let It All Hang Out” workshops, and stretch yourself to your limits during classes presented by Yoga Journey. Learn how to have fun as you get and stay fit with the county’s own Be Fit Mobile, a fitness center on wheels. Sponsored by Be Fit Westchester, a program dedicated to showing people of all ages how to get fit, the van offers hula hoops, obstacle ladders and Frisbees to get everyone moving. White Plains Hospital Center will offer free health screenings for blood pressure and information about strokes, and will show kids why it is important for them to wash their hands! Planned Parenthood will provide teens and young adults with reproductive health care information and services. The YWCA will use plastic models to teach the technique of breast self-examination and the Greenburgh Health Center will offer diabetes screenings. Mothers with infants can try out the Stroller Strides program, a total fitness program that encourages mothers and young children to enjoy outdoor exercise together. For a brief respite from the day’s activities, stop by for a chair massage at the Riverspa tent or a rock ‘n’ roll makeover with Manic Panic make-up.
Entertainment Kacey Morabito, host of 100.7 WHUD radio’s morning show, and Catherine Michaels, host of the station’s “Night Rhythms,” will host the day’s entertainment. Featured on the main stage will be America’s Family band The Veltz Family, along with Youth Theater Interactions, a group of young people who strive for self-awareness by discovering their roots, who will get the crowd hopping Hip-Hop African drumming. Also performing on stage will be Rae Ballard’s “Thoughts in Motion” Dance Company, along with electric violinist Ritsu Katsumata, Latin Jazz vocalist Sofia Koutsovitis; and the all-mom band MotherLode trio.
Women’s Marketplace Browse the more than more-than-20 vendors offering everything from handmade jewelry and gifts, dolls and greeting cards, to gift baskets and specialty tee-shirts, along with chef and catering services, many of which are owned or staffed by graduates and students of the Women’s Enterprise Development Center.
For Kids and Families The Swing Set Mamas and Gigi and the Lend-a-Hand Band will entertain kids of all ages. Diaper relay races presented by Babies R Us will also take place on the kids’ stage. There’ll be children’s health screenings and information available, a jumper castle, and chalk drawing on the plaza sidewalk. Members of the Westchester Arts Council will test kids’ creativity during the Flipbook Fantasy Workshop, in which they will learn the basics of animation by making their own “pocket movie.” They can also create animals and other fanciful stuff from small pieces of paper during the Paper Transformations Workshop for Mommy & Me & More. Super Soccer Stars coach Ian will hone tots’ soccer skills with obstacles and other on-the-grass games. Baked goods and refreshments will be for sale throughout the event, along with a variety of health and ethnic foods. Admission and parking are free. Mamapalooza 2008 is presented by Westchester County Parks and the County’s Office for Women to benefit the Motherhood Foundation, an organization that creates and presents visual, literary and performing arts events for mothers. Sponsors are 100.7 WHUD radio, The Journal News/LoHud.com/LoHudMoms.com, the Women’s Research and Education Fund, Westchester Arts Council, the United States Postal Service, JPMorganChase, White Plains Hospital Center, Coppertone, Be Fit Westchester and Friends of Westchester County Parks, Inc.
