Westchester’s renewed effort to get residents and businesses to recycle is already showing results.
County Executive Andy Spano announced today that revenue generated by recyclables brought to the county recycling center last month broke a record at $903,350.80. The previous record was about $700,000.
In addition, the amount of tonnage was the second highest ever and 17 percent higher than the tonnage in January of last year. This year’s January total was 6,955 tons, taken to the county’s Material Recovery Facility (“The MERF”) in Yonkers.
“We hope to keep doing better and better every month,” said Spano. “In fact, the recycling sections of our website have gotten four times as many hits than before this campaign. Clearly our residents want to do the right thing. I applaud the effort everyone has made.”
In late November, the county announced a renewed effort to get people and businesses to comply with the county’s 15-year-old recycling law. Mandatory enforcement went into effect today but reminders were sent out to every household last December.
