Hilltop Hanover farmer helps with fall gardening

Oct. 07, 2008

Think it’s time to pack up your gardening tools for the season? Think again. Fall is a great time to plant vegetables that can be harvested up until Thanksgiving.

On the first on-line video segment of backyard farming, Hilltop Hanover’s Farmer Mary Ellen Sheehan discusses which vegetables to choose and what techniques to use to have a thriving fall garden.

Viewers can find out how easy it is to start their own garden and how they can get the benefits of home-grown, delicious and healthy foods – and save money too. They’ll also find out how they can yield pounds of vegetables growing them in a patio container or on a small plot in their backyard. The nine-minute video provides a quick and easy way to learn about everything from soil preparation and garden planning to starting herbs and vegetables from plants or seeds.

The video is the first in a series planned for people to learn the simple things they can do in their own homes to protect the environment and become more self-sufficient. To view the video or learn more about Hilltop Hanover Farm and Environmental Center, go to westchestergov.com.

Hilltop Hanover Farm, a 180-acre former dairy farm, was purchased by the county in 2003 for agricultural preservation, drinking water protection and the promotion of environmental stewardship through demonstration projects and sustainability programs.  Admission is free and the farm is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday.
