The stress of unemployment could be a trigger for some individuals that could lead to depression. Employment (i.e. productivity) is one of the main structures that helps individuals in our society to feel positive, develop financial independence, as well as establish hope for the future. Loss of an important job, the income, colleagues and a daily structure could be a substantial trigger for depression. Changes in employment status (such as starting to work) can also lead to feelings of disappointment and trigger depression. |

The job may not meet internal expectations or working can contribute to feelings of loss by not being with family (i.e. children) and create stress and feelings of guilt around child care. How do I know if I'm depressed or just down in the dumps? If you have been feeling any combination of symptoms, listed on the symptoms page for several weeks or are finding it harder to get motivated, or are having any thoughts of death or suicide, you should contact your primary physician immediately for a referral for treatment.
