Training

     The laboratory provides training in different areas of the Microbiology laboratory to the residents and fellows of New York Medical College and Westchester Medical Center. The training is provided in the laboratory diagnosis of Viruses, Mycobacteria (TB), Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma, Pneumocystis and sexually transmitted diseases (Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia). Residents and fellows spend upto a month receiving training in these laboratories. This training is part of the rotation in preparation for their board certification

     On-site training is provided for new employees and employees that are reassigned to different work areas. The laboratory has an on going continuous education program for all employees in various disciplines of microbiology. Annual training is also provided in safe handling of blood-borne pathogens and in radiation, chemical and fire safety.  Lectures and workshops are organized for laboratory and public health professionals in the diagnosis of infectious agents of public health significance in the community. Confidentiality training for protected health information related to HIPPA requirements, is provided to all existing and new staff members.

     Laboratory tours are arranged for students from colleges and universities from Westchester County and sorrounding areas.

     Student internships are also available in several disciplines of microbiology laboratories. Internship program provides education and training to students in different areas of public health microbiology. It also provides opportunities for students to do research on projects of public health interests.
