The licenses from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the Indian Point 2 and 3 nuclear power plants expire in 2013 and 2015 respectively. Entergy, the owner and operator of the plants, has applied for renewals. The process is now underway.
Consistent with its position on Indian Point that the plants should not be sited in such a populated area, that they are obsolete and that they be should closed, Westchester County is opposing the relicensing of the plants.
In late 2007, the New York State Attorney General joined the county's effort.
