Indian Point Safety
Preparing for a radiological emergency

The Indian Point nuclear power plants are owned by Entergy and located in Buchanan. Like many others throughout Westchester, County Executive Andy Spano has called for closing of these plants. The reason is simple: in the aftermath of the terrorism events of Sept. 11, 2001, he is concerned about the county’s ability to protect nearly a million Westchester residents from a fast-breaking radioactive incident at the plant.

But as long as the plants are here, Westchester residents need to prepare themselves as best they can for any emergency there.

Westchester’s emergency response plan has been developed by trained professionals with input from hundreds of emergency planners and public safety experts.

Find out if you live within the 10-mile radius of Indian Point, known as the emergency planning zone. If you do, there is information you should know about, including the latest emergency guide and map.  The newest Spanish version will be available in October of 2008.

You should also sign up for our emergency notification system (CENS), which we will use to contact you through your e-mail or cell phone if appropriate in an emergency.
